Google buys SageTV; Could Google TV be heading for the cloud? - ZDNet (blog)

Google’s over-the-weekend acquisition of SageTV, a company focused on “place-shifting” technology for TV programming, has revived the chatter around the next version of Google TV, which hasn’t really taken off with consumers since its rollout last fall.

Not only did the Logitech Revue, one of the first Google TV products released, come with a full-size keyboard for navigating the interface - an immediate cyanide pill, as far as I’m concerned - it also fell short when some content providers blocked its access to their programming.

There was some initial speculation that Google might be trying to get into the DVR space with this acquisition - but that makes no sense, seeing how DVRs are largely devices with big hard drives for storing video and the only place where Google seems to want you to store your data is in the cloud. Google hasn’t said what it plans to do with SageTV and SageTV’s announcement of the acquisition was also vague. It read, in part:

Since 2002, we’ve worked to change the TV viewing experience by building cutting-edge software and technology that allows you to create and control your media center from multiple devices. And as the media landscape continues to evolve, we think it’s time our vision of entertainment management grows as well. By teaming up with Google, we believe our ideas will reach an even larger audience of users worldwide on many different products, platforms and services.

It’s anyone’s guess what Google will do with a technology that is working to give users control over their own content and allow them to watch it from multiple devices and/or platforms.

But I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that this could be Google’s push into personal video clouds, an “entertainment management” system that would allow users to presumably access a list of their favorite shows or online videos and not only access them from phones or tablets, but also wirelessly stream them to any Internet-connected display.

(Remember: the other rollout Google TV offering came as embedded technology in a Sony Internet TV, though it also came with a keyboard - just not a full-size one.)

Google has already said it wants to merge Web video and TV programming into one big searchable index to give viewers access to all of the content out there so my speculation about focusing on the “entertainment management” shouldn’t be too far-fetched. Personally, I’d welcome a Google TV service that would allow me to manage my catalog of favorites through a Web interface and then access them from a smartphone, tablet, living room display or even a hotel room TV.

If I’m dreaming, I might as well go big, right? Still, this seems to be the path that the industry is heading down.

Apple’s updated AirPlay service allows users to mirror their iPad displays to their Apple TV-connected screens, which means that the iCloud content that can be accessed by computer, iPhone and iPad can now reach the TV, too.

I’m also intrigued by what Fanhattan is doing with its iPad app, allowing users to search for content anywhere and then watch it on the device. That “search everywhere” capability is what Google has been playing up.

Last fall’s Google TV product may not have been perfect out of the gate, but Google is working to make it better and better with every version, just as it has continued to do with Android, GMail, search and more.

Apple iPhone vs. Android : Phone radiation emission battle (Photos) - International Business Times

With the recent publication by The World Health Organization listing hazardous phones due to radiation level emissions,  consumers are now being more careful at selecting smartphones.  Apple iPhones were generally ranked in the mid-level standings for radiation emission while Android phones were scattered.

The recent study announced that mobile phone radiations is possibly carcinogenic though no link has been evidently connected to cancer.  The Environmental Working Group (EWG) compiled a radiation level list of  the highest and lowest levels of radiation emissions.  The list uses a SAR index to measure human absorption of radiation that mobile phones emit through W/kg.

Let's take a look at how the iPhones stand up against the most popular Android devices.  Among the Apple iPhone models, the iPhone 3GS emitted the most radiation with 1.19 W/kg followed by the iPhone 4 with 1.17 W/kg.  The iPhone 3 emitted the lowest level with 1.03 W/kg.

Among Androids, we will look at the top 4 popular devices which include the HTC myTouch 4g, HTC G2, Motorola Droid X, and HTC Evo 4G.  The Motorola Droid emits the most radiation of the five models with 1.43 W/kg.  The HTC G2 is next with 1.31 W/kg.  Two phones were tied for having the lowest emission with 1.03 W/kg, those were the HTC myTouch 4G and Evo 4G.

In comparison with Apple, the iPhone 3, myTouch 4G and Evo 4G are tied with all three devices emitting 1.03 W/kg.  The iPhone 4 would outduel the remaining 2 Android models with its 1.17 W/kg.  The iPhone 3GS easily out beat the remaining two Android devices.

In conclusion, Apple iPhones are generally safer than the top Android models based on the EWG listing.  Though iPhones are considered safer, it still falls in the middle of the list with numerous phones emitting far less radiation.

Apple has provided precautions and advice on using the iPhones at a safe distance of 15 millimeters.  Other good advice includes using Bluetooth headsets, speaker phone, or simply reduce cellphone usage by calling on landlines whenever possible.

Mobile Apps Help Ease Congestive Heart Failure Symptoms - InformationWeek

12 Innovative Mobile Healthcare Apps
Slideshow: 12 Innovative Mobile Healthcare AppsWireless sensors that monitor physiological functions and physical activities can help reduce symptoms of congestive heart failure and potentially prevent many hospital readmissions, a new study suggests.

Researchers at the UCLA Wireless Health Institute and the UCLA School of Nursing found a small but statistically significant reductions in abnormal readings of weight and blood pressure among elderly patients who had access to wireless, mobile monitors and regular feedback from physicians. They reported their findings in the Journal of Medical Systems.

Using a UCLA-developed system called WANDA (Weight and Activity with Blood Pressure Monitoring), the researchers were able to reduce the frequency of readings outside an acceptable range for weight and blood pressure by 5.6%. Participants had to have been hospitalized for a CHF-related illness within 30 days of enrollment in the study, and all were at least 65 years old.

That may not sound like a big improvement, but the UCLA team said even a reduction of 5.6% could have a major impact on patient quality of life and healthcare spending.

CHF is the leading cause of death in the U.S., killing 282,754 people in 2006 alone, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention statistics cited in the article. About 670,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with CHF every year, and the disease is responsible for $29 billion in annual medical expenses, the study said. In Europe, 24% of hospitalized CHF patients reportedly are readmitted within 12 weeks of discharge.

"Experts and researchers in cardiac medicine suggest monitoring and tracking patients' symptoms on an everyday basis in order to prevent emergencies," the paper said. "However, patients often lack the motivation to exercise and/or monitor their own health related measurements. Hence, a remote health monitoring system with medical oversight should serve useful for observing patients with CHF.

In addition, remote health monitoring systems are extremely cost effective due to the availability of inexpensive monitoring devices and infrastructure."

This study stands in stark contrast to earlier research that relied on antiquated technology such as faxing and on workflow shortcomings. That approach did not allow clinicians to make timely interventions and help modify unhealthy behaviors, the UCLA team said. In particular, a much-maligned 2010 article in the New England Journal of Medicine dismissed the potential of "telemonitoring" even though that study asked patients to phone in their readings regularly. After six months, only 55% of patients even bothered to report as often as three times a week.

"In order to design an effective remote health monitoring system for CHF, it is important to make an automated real-time system for checking important values such as weight, blood pressure, heart rate, daily activity, and symptom responses. A system must send a reminder to patients to reduce gaps in the dataset. In addition, the system should be in real-time to ensure the timely delivery of data to physicians," the UCLA study said.

The UCLA Wireless Health Institute and the nursing school designed WANDA on three tiers of technology. Sensors monitor patient health, take relevant measurements, and transmit readings to the second tier, made up of Web servers to store and analyze data. The third tier is a database server for backup and recovery purposes.

They built two versions of the first tier, one for elderly and less-technically proficient patients that sends data over standard phone lines and a second, mobile version that works with Apple's iPhone and the Android smartphone operating system, to transmit data to the server via Wi-Fi or 3G cellular networks.

WANDA takes measurements of weight, blood pressure, heart rate, and physical activity, and incorporates the heart failure somatic awareness scale (HFSAS), which tracks measures 12 metrics related to awareness of CHF symptoms. These include elevated heart rate, chest pains, swollen feet, and shortness of breath. Should anything be abnormal or should users simply fail to take the necessary readings, the automated system sends a text message to help get patients back on track.

"Wireless health technologies, including pervasive sensors and wireless communications, can potentially help CHF patients through daily monitoring along with guidance and feedback," the study concludes. "Patients who have cardiovascular system disorders can measure their weight, blood pressure, activity, and other health related measurements by using wireless health applications whenever and wherever they need to. A wireless health system gives real-time and computer-based analysis, reducing the need for specialist visits. This remote real-time care prevents emergency situations and alerts caregivers when they must help patients."

Medic Mobile Announces The First Mobile SIM App For Healthcare - Business Wire (press release)

Eastern Daylight Time

WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Medic Mobile, a proven innovator in mobile health technology, is proud to announce the development of the first SIM Application for healthcare. SIM apps can operate on 80% of the world’s phones from $15 handsets to Android smartphones – and Medic’s new implementation of this technology brings data collection to a new level of accessibility and affordability. Medic’s Chief Strategist Isaac Holeman announced the new product at the Mobile Health Summit this week.

“In healthcare, it's necessary to exchange structured information. SIM apps provide a new method with great potential that can be installed and updated remotely over the air”

The flow of information is vital to healthcare networks and is a constant challenge in the developing world where resources are scarce. Medic Mobile is known for deploying SMS-based healthcare communication solutions on $60 Java enabled phones. Now with SIM apps, Medic is creating simple menu-based applications that function on handsets four times less expensive and operable in the hardest to reach areas. “In healthcare, it's necessary to exchange structured information. SIM apps provide a new method with great potential that can be installed and updated remotely over the air,” says CTO Dieterich Lawson.

CEO Josh Nesbit sees a bright future for SIM mhealth apps, “They’re easy for users, they've been proven to scale in mobile banking, and mobile phone penetration is skyrocketing. We want to meet health workers and patients where they are, designing applications for technology they're using.” Fifty percent of people on the African continent own a mobile phone, projected to reach 100% in the next few years.

Medic’s first official SIM app is Kuvela, developed for PSI with support from the Maternal Health Task Force, and the company plans to develop many more. "We required reporting tools that can be rolled out at large scale for low cost. The combination of a SIM application and reporting dashboard will allow us to monitor the quality of our program across multiple districts. This would've been impossible without Medic Mobile's work,” said Gunther Baugh, Project Coordinator for PSI.

“People get excited about the iPhone apps because of profit potential. We’re excited about designing SIM applications because of the impact potential,” says Nesbit. “I can imagine all eight million global community health workers utilizing SIM applications to support their work and improve the lives of their patients.” In the future, Medic hopes to build applications for patients to help them manage their own health by scheduling appointments, accessing remote consultations, alerting the nearest clinic in medical emergencies, and more.

MEDIC MOBILE is a non-profit organization seeking to advance rural healthcare networks in the developing world through the implementation of sustainable, appropriate technologies delivered through mobile phones. By developing new software and building upon open source platforms including: FrontlineSMS, OpenMRS, Ushahidi, Google Apps, and HealthMap, Medic Mobile seeks to help medical workers gather health data efficiently and assist in patient follow-up. Their tools are currently used in eleven countries, in areas covering 4.5 million people.

What's Wrong With Apple? - Forbes (blog)

What the heck is going on with Apple shares?

The stock is getting whacked, without obvious provocation. Apple is down $7.50, or 2.3%, to $312.76 this morning; for the month of June to date, the stock is off around $35, or about 10%.

At a time when key rivals in the mobile phone and tablet sectors like Nokia, HP and Research in Motion are struggling mightily to stay relevant in the face of an onslaught of competition from Apple and Android devices, the stock is stuck in a rut. Apple now trades for under 13x estimated profits for the September 2011 fiscal year, and less than 11x FY 2012 projected profits. Back out the company’s nearly $66 billion in cash and investments, and the stock looks cheaper still.

For reasons I can’t quite fathom, investors seem far more interested in profitless newcomers to the public market like Pandora and LinkedIn than they are in the single best technology company extant.

I realize that there are some specific overhangs for the stock: unclear timing on the next generation iPhone, the threat of competition from Android, the dismaying situation surrounding the health of CEO Steve Jobs. But the stock appears to have discounted all that….Apple shares look like a blue-light special. Get them at this price while you can.

Valencell, Inc. Announces $5.5 Million Series B Venture Financing - MarketWatch (press release)

RALEIGH, N.C.,(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Valencell, an innovator in mobile health and fitness technology, announced today that it has received $5.5 million in Series B venture investment. The round was led by Best Buy Capital, the investment group of Best Buy Co., Inc., with participation from Series A investors TDF and True Ventures.

Valencell is the creator of Healthset(R) powered earbuds, a disruptive technology which gives audio headsets the ability to monitor the health and fitness of the user. Healthset sensor technology tracks real-time physiological metrics including heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, speed and more, while the consumer listens to music, talks over the phone, or goes about daily life activities. Data is streamed to smartphones and/or mp3-players through wired or wireless links, enabling live body metrics, training, and coaching via fitness applications on mobile devices and online.

"People everywhere are listening to music while running and exercising," explained CEO and cofounder Dr. Steven LeBoeuf. "Integrating heart rate sensors directly and seamlessly into music earbuds fits right into the behavior of consumers today. Everyone's body responds differently to exercise, so being able to monitor the heart, the body's engine, will help consumers customize and personalize workout regiments for their specific goals whether it's for weight loss, toning or endurance. Users will be able to view their metrics live through fitness applications on their iPhone, Android phones, other mobile devices and online."

Recent research from PricewaterhouseCoopers cites growing demand for mobile health monitoring: 88% of physicians said they would like their patients to track their health information and 40% of individuals said they would buy a personal health-monitoring device or pay for a subscription to send health information to their providers.

Research from the Consumer Electronics Association also demonstrates a growing market opportunity for fitness related technology, citing that 47% of US consumers have used a fitness technology in the past year, and that 37% of online US consumers anticipate purchasing fitness technology in the next 12 months.

"What makes Valencell unique is that we capture meaningful, actionable, personalized health and fitness metrics with devices people already wear," said LeBoeuf. "Carriers and mobile device manufacturers have started launching innovative products and services in mobile health and fitness markets, but until the introduction of Valencell's Healthset technology, there hasn't been a way to seamlessly and accurately capture body metrics throughout daily life activities and send this data to the user's smartphone in real time."

In 2010, Valencell validated the accuracy of its sensor technologies through a clinical study at the Duke University Center for Living medical facilities and is actively licensing its technologies to strategic partners, so it can be part of everyone's favorite headset brands. This Series B funding is being used to expand the Valencell team, increase the number of licensing deals with strategic partners, and accelerate the product pipeline to include additional physiological monitoring capabilities. Seeded by the three founders, Valencell previously raised a Series A round of $1 million and has been awarded more than $3 million in R&D grants.

About Valencell

Founded in 2006 and headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, Valencell develops physiological monitoring technology and licenses this technology to industry partners for integration with brand-name products used by consumers each day. Valencell's Healthset(R) platform integrates vital signs sensors directly into music earbuds and audio headsets already used by tens of millions of consumers while exercising. Healthset(R) powered earbuds track real-time heart rate, calories burned, steps taken, distance traveled, speed, and other physiological metrics while consumers listen to music, talk over the phone, or go about daily life activities. This data is streamed to phones and mp3-players through wired or wireless links, enabling live body metrics, training, and coaching via fitness applications on mobile devices and online. The application of Valencell's technologies span across multiple markets including consumer mobile, fitness, gaming, mHealth, and personal protection equipment (PPE).

Perfect Your Parking Skills with the NRMA Insurance Car Park Challenge App - RedOrbit

NRMA Insurance today launched Car Park Challenge, a fun game app with a serious side for iPhone, iPad and Google Android.

According to NRMA Car Insurance data*, 1 in 7 collisions happen in car parks and the app tests your driving skills in these stressful environments.

The game features data from NRMA Insurance’s Research Centre to simulate estimated repair costs for any damage to the car, adding a level of realism to the simulation. Throughout the game users avoid damage to their car as they drive through 10 levels filled with tight corners and different obstacles.

NRMA Insurance spokesperson Mariana Cidade said according to the data, collisions are the most common types of claims in car parks nation-wide.

‘More than half of car park collisions involve other vehicles (60%), followed by collisions where no other party is involved, such as colliding with a pole or shopping trolleys. This game has a serious side – a reminder that little car park prangs can amount to quite a bit of damage.’

To design the look and feel of the app, game artists started with digital photographs of real world miniatures and built on them to create the game's rich levels, detailed cars and unique look.
NRMA Insurance Car Park Challenge is available free of charge from Apple’s iPhone App Store now. It will be available for iPad and Google Android platform soon.

Is Apple's declining stock cause for concern? - CNET

Apple's shares have been on the decline as of late, causing strong reactions from investors and pundits.

As of this writing, Apple's shares are trading at $314.65, down $5.61 on the day and more than $50 from the stock's 52-week high of $364.90. The company's stock decline has come at a time when the Dow Jones Industrial Average has also been slumping. In April, the Dow was above 12,810. As of this writing, it's at 12,072.25.

Earlier today, financial site SeekingAlpha dug into Apple's declining shares, saying that the company doesn't appear to be as insulated from industry- or market-wide factors as it was not long ago.

"In the past, Apple has been able to rise above and show strength even when the market and other tech stocks were dropping," SeekingAlpha contributor Roguemont wrote. "This no longer appears to be the case."

The contributor, who is an independent trader and investor, argued that Apple's decline might also be due to Steve Jobs' health issues. The Apple CEO is currently on a medical leave of absence for an indefinite amount of time, and so far, Apple has not commented on when he might be coming back--if at all.

CNN also mentioned Apple's stock issues, citing public messages from users of social site StockTwits who are concerned by the decline. One user said that Apple is now subject to the "law of large numbers," which limits a company's ability to indefinitely post huge gains in revenue and profit; eventually, growth slows.

However, Apple's growth has been nothing short of astounding over the last several quarters, even though it had already been posting big numbers in previous periods. During its fiscal second quarter ended March 26, Apple posted a profit of nearly $6 billion on revenue of $24.7 billion. The company's revenue and profit were up 83 percent and 95 percent year over year, respectively.

Looking ahead, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said in April that the company expects its revenue to rise to $23 billion in the fiscal third quarter. Last year, it generated $15.7 billion in revenue during the period.

So, why are Apple's shares slumping?

It's tough to say. But aside from Steve Jobs' health and Apple's growth, Piper Jaffray senior research analyst Gene Munster said in a phone conversation with CNET today that it might also have to do with investor concerns over the recent announcement that the company's retail boss, Ron Johnson, is leaving Apple to become president and CEO of J.C. Penney.

Even so, Munster said, "we think Apple is in as good a shape as ever," indicating that there is no single, good reason for the decline.

It's also worth noting that the concerns over Apple's shares might be premature. The company's stock price is undoubtedly lower than it has been as of late, but over the last 52-week period, its lowest share price was $235.56. Moreover, during the last year, the company's shares have jumped 15 percent.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its share price.

T-Mobile USA Offers a Daily Deals App - New York Times (blog)

Even phone companies are getting in on the daily deals craze.

T-Mobile's app is available for any Android smartphone.T-Mobile’s app is available for any Android smartphone.

On Wednesday, T-Mobile USA is unveiling an Android application that will aggregate daily deals by location from a variety of sources, including the established social couponing company LivingSocial. The app, called More for Me, will feature group deals across a variety of categories, including upscale meals, health and beauty services, clothing offers, concert tickets, cooking classes and outdoor activities.

The app lets people save interesting deals and share them with friends via Facebook, text message and e-mail from within the application, which is available for any Android smartphone, not just phones on T-Mobile USA’s wireless network. T-Mobile plans to preload the application onto future handsets and eventually release versions for other operating systems, like BlackBerry and Windows phones.

Brad Duea, a senior vice president at T-Mobile USA, said the application was an example of the company’s growing interest in looking for new ways to make money and advertise its wares. T-Mobile will share in the revenue generated from the deals but also work to create exclusive offers that can be delivered through the application.

“We can work with new partners who want to target a certain demographic, and deliver offers with SMS on their handsets,” Mr. Duea said.

Mr. Duea also said the company was considering the opportunity to deliver deals that relate specifically to T-Mobile through the application, appealing to existing and potentially new customers.

“We can give deals on phone accessories, calling plans that are both national and based on a Zip code,” he said.

Mr. Duea said T-Mobile USA, which is in the process of being acquired by AT&T, will still offer the app post-merger. “Apps like this will continue to have a life after the merger,” he said. “I think new ventures like these will still have great value to our shareholders.”

21 June 2011 Last updated at 05:59 GMT By Eleanor Bradford BBC Scotland Health Correspondent SIGN app on hand-held computer The SIGN app can be downloaded to iphones, android phones and hand-held computers A new app for smartphones and tablets designed by the Scottish NHS has become one of the most popular free medical apps available for download.

It outlines what kind of care patients should expect when they suffer from particular medical conditions.

The SIGN app (SIGN stands for the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network) was the idea of Prof John Kinsella.

He works in intensive care at Glasgow's Royal Infirmary, and is also a member of an NHS organisation called Healthcare Improvement Scotland.

Prof Kinsella realised he needed a quicker way of accessing the latest NHS guidelines.

"The problem is that clinical guidance is sometimes in a paper form which is difficult to find, or it can be accessed on the internet which means logging in and often you've got to log out of some other programme first," he said.

"In that period you are losing valuable time when you should be doing some other task. It is basically a delay, and sometimes a delay prevents you from doing it at all."

The real advantage is that these guidelines are easy to access by members of the public”

End Quote Prof John Kinsella Healthcare Improvement Scotland Mobile phones no longer interfere with medical equipment, meaning doctors and other medical staff can use smartphones and hand-held tablet computers while working on the ward.

The app, which was initially available for iPhones but is now also available to Android phones, has proved a surprise hit.

It offers guidelines on a wide range of conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, diabetes and the management of asthma and psoriasis.

Although it has not been advertised, it has been downloaded more than 8,000 times since it was launched in April.

"The real advantage is that these guidelines are easy to access by members of the public," said Prof Kinsella.

"It is entirely logical that if you have a certain condition, it is very useful for you to be able to look up what care you should expect to receive.

"This empowers patients and makes the discussion between the doctor and patient much more well informed."

As well as being a useful gadget if you live in the UK, the app is also being downloaded by smartphone users all over the world.

Hand-held tablet computer with apps The SIGN app makes information available to health professionals and members of the public

Dr Helena Liira is a GP in Finland.

She said: "I could use it to update my information on the diseases that are covered. I can check whether my practice is according to the guidelines.

"I cannot use it for all purposes because it only covers, at the moment, 11 topics so it is quite limited but it is a good way to check what's going on in these important diseases."

As NHS Scotland produces more guidance on a larger range of conditions the SIGN app will be updated.

The app also has the potential to save the NHS money by being more environmentally friendly.

Until now Healthcare Improvement Scotland has had to print more than 15,000 paper copies of every guideline it produces.

Microsoft Unlocks Mobile Access To HealthVault - InformationWeek

12 Innovative Mobile Healthcare Apps
Slideshow: 12 Innovative Mobile Healthcare AppsMicrosoft has added mobile connectivity to its HealthVault personal health record platform, making it easier to develop health apps for its Windows Phone 7 smartphone and increasing competition in the mobile healthcare space.

The company has built client libraries for constructing standalone HealthVault applications across all of the most popular phone platforms. The software development kit and samples for the Windows Phone 7 are available now and will be made available for Apple iOS and Google Android within weeks, said Sean Nolan, chief architect for Microsoft's health solutions group in a recent blog post.

In an interview, Nolan said it's important to expand HealthVault so that patients can use their mobile phones to track medical test results and blood pressure readings and keep up with doctor visits.

"In health, where virtually all meaningful activity happens away from our laptops: office visits, emergencies, workouts, daily glucose testing, eating, sleeping, you name it, it makes a lot of sense to make HealthVault available where people can easily use it," Nolan said. "Making it easier for developers to create innovative mobile apps will enable consumers to collect and use their health information in new and interesting ways."

Microsoft's latest move comes at a time when there has been a flurry of activity among software developers who have built health apps for the Apple iPhone.

According to Nolan, he is looking forward to competing in the health apps market. "Just as nearly half of HealthVault Web applications do not use our .NET Web platform, we expect many mobile apps will not use our Windows Phone 7 platform. We're excited about the competition that implies--it's great for consumers, and frankly we're very confident that our development platforms will continue to win on their own merits," Nolan said.

Just last month, Akvelon released Health Guard, a mobile application designed specifically for HealthVault and Windows Phone 7. The Health Guard application enables customers to keep a record of their personal health information such as blood pressure, pulse, and weight, and allows them and their doctors to track these measures over time.

Recent research from PricewaterhouseCoopers reveals just how lucrative the health apps market is expected to be; consumers say they are willing to spend $700 million for mobile health applications. Younger people are also more likely to adopt these devices, with 30% of consumers aged 18 to 24 saying they are more likely to spend out-of-pocket for health apps or programs to monitor and track health conditions, compared with 12% of consumers aged 65 and older, the PwC report said.

There have also been other improvements to HealthVault, including allowing Continuity of Care Records (CCR) and Continuity of Care Documents (CCD) that are uploaded by an application to be automatically reconciled.

Nolan said previously users had to manually sign into HealthVault and confirm they wanted to incorporate the documents into their record. That process created a barrier to the efficient sharing of clinical information among authorized applications. HealthVault's added automatic reconciliation feature gives users the opportunity to sidestep the manual process. Manual reconciliation will, however, still be required for conditions without ICD-9 or ICD-10 codes, as HealthVault considers them as possibly sourced from billing data.

Microsoft has also added social networking capabilities to HealthVault. According to Nolan, the latest upgrades allow users to sign into HealthVault using their Facebook credentials. "With this release, we're acknowledging Facebook's central role in people's lives," Nolan said in his blog.

The Healthcare IT Leadership Forum is a day-long venue where senior IT leaders in healthcare come together to discuss how they're using technology to improve clinical care. It happens in New York City on July 12. Find out more.

Yahoo Launches App-Discovery App for iOS, Android - PC Magazine

If you can't beat them, complement them.

Yahoo on Thursday released an app that uses Yahoo search technology to find and recommend apps from Apple's App Store and Google's Android Market.

"Today, Yahoo! Mobile is introducing a fun, fast way to search and discover mobile apps. Yahoo! AppSpot, a new mobile application, works like a flashlight in the darkness of more than 425,000-plus apps in the Apple App Store and 200,000 apps in Android Market," wrote Anil Panguluri, Yahoo Product Director of Mobile Search, in a blog post. If you'd rather not download the app onto your mobile device, you can also search via your browser at Yahoo App Search.

So how does AppSpot differ from the bestselling and featured apps you can already find in both app markets?

According to Yahoo, "Unlike 'Top Apps' lists that provide the same apps day after day, you'll get new, personalized app suggestions on a daily basis, so you're always introduced to the latest, most interesting, and relevant apps."

With your permission, Yahoo scans your current app library and notes previous app searches to deliver relevant results. You can also search for apps in 20 different categories, like Health, Travel, Photography, and Navigation.

The idea isn't completely novel as you'll find similar offerings from smaller app discovery apps like Chomp and AppsFire, but you might find different results with one powered by a major search company.

Health Alliance seeks reversal of State insurance quoter - Champaign/Urbana News-Gazette

SPRINGFIELD - Health Alliance Medical Plans asked a judge to reverse health plan contracts which were employees of the State and pensioners scrambling around 17 June Date deadline.

The Urbana insurer has sued the day Friday in Sangamon County Circuit Court against the State and several of its departments and officials involved in the selection of new plans of managed care - including the Department of health and Services to the family and its Director Julie Hamos and the Department of Central Management Services and its Director James Sledge.

The combination of the names also several bidders insurance - Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, Humana, PersonalCare and HealthLink.

Health Alliance asked the Court to:

-Declare that the tendering process was conducted unfairly and illegally.

-To force Hamos to reverse the price of new contracts which went to the Blue Cross and Blue Shield, HealthLink and PersonalCare.

-Enter a judgment declaring the denial of the protests of the Alliance of the health of the new contract awards were wrong and contrary to law and order Chief Matt Brown supply State (also named in the suit) to confirm the events.

-Prohibit Hamos expansion and continuous self-insurance for State employees and retirees on the wishes of a legislative body, the Commission on the forecast of Government and accountability, which voted 8-3 on May 25 of "not to give notice and consent" to this action.

Continuation of the health of the Alliance argues that the company been subjected to unfair treatment in the tendering process. For example, he says, the Department of health and Family Services said he asked Health Alliance HMO additional proposals application "best and final offers" and then not asked.

The prosecution also argues the State on the bids for insurance, Mercer consulting firm, had a business relationship with at least two of the vendors of insurance, and Health Alliance received a lower score on Open Access Plan submissions due to errors in notation.

Continuation of Health Alliance also contends that the State violated its own requirement that bidders have networks provider in place before January 1, and the award of contracts to Blue Cross HMO and Blue Shield "was based on the false assumption that the bidder would be develop a network of provider-based r.".

The State contracts with Blue Cross HMO for 38 counties.

Health Alliance more claims that it was the only sensitive bidder has an HMO plan accepted by providers of almost 79 000 civil servants of the State.

The Health Alliance Medical Plans officials were not available to comment on the prosecution.

Mike Claffey, spokesman for the Department of health services and Services to the family, said that the Agency remains confident, it follows the code of the State "the T" procurement and which has been verified by the Executive Ethics Commission.

"We would also note that the plaintiff in the legal action was an opportunity to oppose the request for proposals (call for proposals) in the process, and preferred to not.". Now, after having lost the award after the refusal of their protest, they are turned to the courts. »

What it means for the employees of the State, with less than two weeks left to register for new health plans?

"We will continue the process of contracting with the winning bidders," said Claffey.

Members of the Group State health plan are advised to continue the registration process and do not forget the date limit of 17 June, said.

"We absolutely trust in the process of procurement and contracts with these providers and their ability to provide quality health care at a price that will save money from the State during this budget period difficult," said Claffey.

Second State of Oklahoma to register for the controversial health plan - Tulsa World

HEALTH<br /><br /><b>Sen. Clark Jolley:</b> He says states can do a better job managing funds.
HEALTH
Senator Clark Jolley: He says that the States can do a better job managing the funds.

Proponents say that it is a more flexible, less bureaucratic alternative to the President Barack Obama health care initiatives.

Opponents say that it is a chimera that seeks to tinker with mechanism for political reasons the country's health care financing.

The month last Governor Mary Fallin signed legislation to join the compact. So far, the Georgia is the only other State to join. Several States are considering members, including Texas and Missouri.

If it is approved by Congress, the plan transform most federal funding of health block grants to States, which would be free to set their policies on how the money would be spent.

"Rather than the Federal Government with the administration of a large bureaucratic system nightmare, what we are seeking to do is join with other States, in the creation of a regional health care delivery system," said Senator Clark Jolley, R.-Edmond, Oklahoma compact author of the legislation.

Governments are more sensitive to the needs of citizens and are more efficient with money, Jolley said.

"I think Oklahoma wants to be in the field of the administration of health care, but it is preferable to Federal Government administer health care", Jolley said. "It is one of those situations where you have the possibility to put your head in the sand and do nothing in response to the Federal Government (health care Act), or you can try to find solutions and alternative solutions to try to provide a different option that can be better and better the State".

Opponents of the proposal say that Congress will never agree to the plan.

In the House of the State of the debate on the proposal in April, ABR. Scott Inman, D - Oklahoma City, said that he would have the related proposal so that he could put it between copies of the daughter of "Winnie the Pooh" and "Cinderella".

"This is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen," said Inman. "This is a bad law." It will never become effective. ... The Federal Government will never grant us this authority. It has never been in the past. ... Not this is going to do now. »

Rep. Richard Morrissette, D - Oklahoma City, said that the proposal unnecessary tinkering with system of funding of the health of the nation because its supporters do not like the President Barack Obama.

"You can all hate the President, that you want to." You can politicize that what you want. But changes in our law thanks to dislike or belief policy or emotion is not the right way to go on the amendment of our Constitution, he said.

Eric O'Keefe, Chairman of the national organization for pushing the proposal, said that Oklahomans would do better to determine how to distribute health spending.

"I believe that the people of Oklahoma, through their legislature, would do a better job than the federal bureaucracy," he said. "Take care of our people is not something to be delegated to folks 1,500 miles away."

"The question for Oklahomans, it is you are better off taxed and send your money to Washington and do come back with strings on it, or just keep and the performer internally."

O'Keefe said he figures, need you approximately 20 legislatures of State accepting the compact to force the issue to Congress. That could happen as early as March, even though it may take another Congress election cycle for the votes to be there.

If the proposal is approved by the Congress, each Member State shall approve the compact again.

He said that no comparable example is a program funded by the Federal Government which leaves so many details to States.

"This is a very ambitious proposal, deliberately so", he said. "It would be a huge departure from power and the money from the Federal Government." It would only occur under the political and financial constraints.

"The financial hardship comes, regardless what we do." The political pressure that we're working with folks local to create, "said O'Keefe.

If it is approved by Congress, the compact would mean federal funding for health care programs such as Medicare and Medicaid would be sent to the States as block grants.

States would be guaranteed as much funding they received in 2010 adjusted annually for inflation and population changes.

States would be released by federal regulation of health, including the federal initiative to health and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration of the restrictions on drugs. States could agree to follow federal laws or design their own systems.

Veterans Affairs hospitals and Indian health care facilities would not be affected by the change.

New health law to be explained Saturday - Beckley register-Herald

BECKLEY - Registration is open for those of Beckley who are interested in learning more about how the affordable care Act is poised to change the health care industry.

Controversial health care reform is broad, sweeping and can be confusing. Why the virginiens West for health care affordable and health reform for West Virginia organizations will sponsor free training on the law Saturday at the Beckley - Raleigh County Convention Center.

Nurses and social workers can receive free credit for continuing education units by treating in exchange for committing to the education of friends, colleagues and neighbours about the affordable care Act.

"We will give people training some tools that make having this locally much easier education program,"exectuvie Director WVAHC Perry Bryant said."

For example, he added that they are provided with a copy of "faces of Reform in West Virginia", a DVD which allows individuals to tell their story of how they are affected by the affordable care Act. He said that the purpose is to teach at least 200 Virginiens West, which can then teach at least 50 in their own communities.

Bryant, said the reform is essentially equivalent to three fundamental principles: extend health insurance to all Americans, fundamental change of settlement control of costs and insurance.

"Insurance companies are going to be many more as insurance in the future", said Bryant. "They will be able to refuse the protection of the people because of pre-existing conditions or to load more because of their State of health". It really fundamentally changes how the insurance company. »

Containing costs, Bryant said, is accomplished by moving away from the current system of paying doctors by service and instead by looking at the results of their care.

"The incentives for this arrangement is to provide more services," said Bryant. "Which does not take into account quality, so we need to really change how it is pay us health care".

Often, he said that he will meet people who are insured and want to know why they should be concerned about the extension of the health insurance for uninsured persons. Bryant said he was more than a moral imperative to help those in need.

"It's not as if uninsured persons get sick," said Bryant. "They are doing and they end up in the hospital emergency room in the more expensive framework as possible." The cost of their treatment is transmitted to those of us who have commercial health insurance. »

He added that about four West virginiens die each week because of lack of health insurance.

The ACA can also stimulate economic development in 2014, said Bryant.

"Currently greater deterrence unique entrepreneurship in America and Virginia is unable to obtain health insurance, Bryant a." people are trapped in the jobs they will love cannot be not because primarily of inability to obtain insurance if they go out and start their own business. "".

Bryant said until this response from the other two sessions in Morgantown and Wheeling was extremely grateful.

The session begins at 10 a.m. and lasts until 2: 30 pm. According to a release of the Organization, the event is intended for health professionals, business people and interested members of the public.

New Jersey seeks to shrink Medicaid - NPR

Cash-strapped States rethink how much coverage of health care, they can afford to provide their neediest residents. Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie wants to cut the $ 500 million in Medicaid expenses - in part by freezing more of 20,000 residents of the State of the program. Critics say that cuts would be detrimental to those who can do less.

For years, in New Jersey expanded the coverage of health care for low-income residents - people like Deborah Shupenko of Passaic, New Jersey. But last month, after 10 years of health insurance financed by the State, Shupenko received a letter by mail.

"It is expected that my last day of the family of New Jersey coverage will be July 31, 2011," she said.

Shupenko says that she had no idea this was happening.

"I was shocked", she said. "I was floored.

Shupenko suffers many medical disorders, including asthma and osteoarthritis. She is unemployed. At 56, she is too young for Medicare, but too sick to find affordable insurance on its own.

"The worst case scenario is that something catastrophic happens to me, that I could lose everything," she said. "A Bill large hospital, or a large medical or surgical bill, I could be out in the street.". I could be homeless. »

"Costs of ' Out Of Control"

Shupenko is one of some 1 400 New Jersey residents who lose their coverage financed by the State of this year. And Governor Christie, a rising star in the Republican party, said New Jersey has no choice but to make even deeper cuts in health spending.

"The growth of the Medicaid is out of control", he said in February, his speech on the budget. "We manage better." Medicaid spending will grow by nearly one billion dollars last year. This is the definition of a control program off. »

A few weeks ago the Christie administration released more details on how he intends to manage health expenditures. The part the most controversial of the New Jersey plan would block access to Medicaid for approximately 23 000 people - the next year and he could do so primarily by the exclusion of any adult who made more than 6 000 $ a year.

Democrats - including State Senator Joe Vitale - are promising to fight against the cuts.

"We have seen a backyard of stable March over the past two years," said Vitale. "Huge jumps by considerably reducing access to affordable health care for hundreds of thousands of New Jersey." It is wrong. »

A modest proposal?

The Federal Government is expected to go look for the tab for a major expansion of Medicaid, but not until 2014. In the meantime, States have to apply for a special Washington waiver if they want to make major changes to Medicaid eligibility. Compared to other States - including Arizona - changes in New Jersey is to research are modest, says Jeffrey Brenner, Director of the Camden Coalition on health care providers.

"To the credit of Governor Christie, he chose to innovate and to try to Medicaid to provide better care at lower cost," said Brenner. "If we are to put in perspective."

Even with the proposed reductions, Brenner, said program Medicaid in New Jersey would always enter approximately one million people. But it is little comfort to Crystal Snedden with New Jersey citizen Action. It calls into question the Christie administration proposed Medicaid cuts will really be saving as much money as announced.

"On paper, according to their budget, it will look as they have saved money, but we all know that in the long term, this will we cost more money in charity care and more money in a sicker population," she said.

New Jersey exemption application is not formally due until the end of the month, but opponents are already urging the administration Obama to dismiss key parts.

E. coli: Chief of health Slams Germany - Sky News

Speaking before talks of urgency between the Ministers of agriculture, John Dalli urged the authorities to avoid making "premature conclusions" because "he spread unjustified fears."

He said the European Parliament in Strasbourg that any such public information must be scientifically sound and full-proof before becoming public.

His warning comes after the accused wrongly of hatching Spain cucumbers, then beans germinated a farm in Germany.

I am very concerned by the heavy burden of debt and disease that these bacteria of foodborne has caused Europe's population.

The European Commissioner in charge of health John Dalli

Mr Dalli said European measures against any product would be "disproportionate."

"I am very concerned by the heavy burden of debt and disease that these bacteria of food origin has caused to the European population", he said.

"I note that the outbreak is geographically limited to the area surrounding the city of Hamburg, so there is no reason to act at European level."

Mr Dalli, stated the commission holds daily meetings to analyse the situation and insisted that the EU early warning system had worked, although "we must learn the lessons that we are going along."

A Spanish delegate standing in the Chamber, waving a cucumber and said: "we need to restore the honour of the vegetable."

Then he accused Germany of rush in cucumbers Spanish to blame and said that the European Commission had not enough after that they were cleared.

"Farmers have a right to economic compensation," he said.

EU agriculture officials are to hold talks for emergency outbreak of e. coli later today.

The Summit at the time where the German authorities seem to be drifting on the investigation in the infection, which has killed 22 people.

Andreas Hensel, head of the Federal Institute of the Germany for the assessment of the risks, has warned: "it must be clear on this: perhaps we can only identify the source."

It believed sprouted beans of a farm in the region between the cities of the North of Hamburg and Hannover, Uelzen, could be the source of infection in five German States.

But the Ministry of agriculture, said Monday 23 40 sprout farm samples proved negative for the strain of the bacterium e. coli, responsible for the outbreak.

This kind of soothing response is incompetent.

Michael Osterholm, University of Minnesota.

A broader test will now be carried out on samples of older germs and the packaging of the farm.

During this time, an American expert called the investigation a "disaster".

"This kind of soothing response is incompetent, Michael Osterholm, Director of the Centre for infectious disease research and policy at the University of Minnesota, said."

He accused German authorities of the suspicion of casting cucumbers and cabbage without having sufficient data.

The E.coli bacteria under the microscope

The European Union health Commissioner defends German researchers, however, saying that they were under pressure for the crisis took place.

"We have to understand that people in certain situations have a responsibility to inform their citizens as soon as possible of any danger that might exist for them," said John Dalli.

The World Health Organization declared the strain is rare and has been seen in humans before, but in this type of outbreak ever.

Many of those infected have developed syndrome uremic hemolytic disease, a potentially fatal complication that can affect the kidneys.
