SAN DIEGO--Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found minorities sexual teens are more likely to engage in dangerous behaviors, ranging from not wearing a seat belt use of methamphetamines.
The report compiled eight years of survey data of risk behaviours young CDC of seven States - Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, from Vermont, and Wisconsin and six urban school districts, Boston, Chicago, Milwaukee, New York, San Diego and San Francisco.
The surveys ask students to report that 76 behaviours dangerous or unhealthy, they participated. They include questions about smoking, consumption of drugs, sexual activity, diet and exercise.
Researchers said gay teens, Lesbian and bisexual could behave more reckless because they are more likely to be the target of bullies or feel dangerous.
Analysis of the margin of the investigations of San Diego Kleinsmith shows related trends.
"I watched young people who have been harassed because they were gay men and lesbians and compared their risk behaviour with children who were not," said Kleinsmith, leading health and sexual education for San Diego Unified programs. "And even in our neighbourhood we saw very high rates of depression, alcohol consumption - thus a difference in behavior."
Kleinsmith, and principal researcher CDC, Laura Kann, Ph.d., said while it has long been anecdotal that adolescent sexual minorities were more likely to compromise their own health and safety, the new report is the first large-scale research to produce empirical data.
San Diego Unified efforts to instate a policy of intimidation district this year is an example of how city schools are trying to create safe environments to help combat this trend, according to Kleinsmith.
She said "If there is a connectivity high school or they have a family to support, we do not see the same kind of health hazard". "But when you're talking about children who are victims of harassment, who feel connected to school, this is where you tend to see depression and other high-risk behaviours".
San Diego is one of the four areas included in the survey which already form the staff on how to address the problems encountered by the sexual minority students.
Kann, stated that she hoped that the data would stimulate more school districts to take similar measures.
